Objectives of the Workshop

Most of the world's lakes are shallow and smalll covering around 1% of the Earth's surface, however, they hold more than 40% of the world's species. Mismanagement of the hydrology, introductions of exotic fish and eutrophication with heavy load of nutrients (especially P) from urban sewage, industry and agriculture are among the most important threats that make shallow lakes shift to phytoplankton-dominated turbid water state with loss of submersed macrophytes.

This workshop will examine the alternative stable states of shallow lakes at varying nutrient levels and restoration starategies for the eutrophicated ones. The extensive studies carried out especially in Britain, Denmark and the Netherlands have radically changed the view of classical freshwater ecology, and formed the foundation of shallow lake ecology that will be introduced to Turkish participants in this workshop. This workshop aims at wetland and shallow lake researchers as well as state officers, resource managers and NGOs.
